The Saturday Six: Momentum, Market Moves & Maybe Buys ⚾️

Card prices move for a reason. Sometimes it’s hype or performance; sometimes it’s weird market timing. Here are six players seeing action this week, plus the data, context, and gut feel behind them.

This is not buying or investment advice. I’m simply reporting the data I’m seeing. Please do your own research and make your own decisions. Just because cards have increased in value up to this point, it doesn’t mean they will continue to do so.

I’m getting all of this data from either the Market Movers or Card Hedge platform. These are not my platforms, I’m simply a user and affiliate of them. These tools aren’t perfect; no tool is. I’ve seen instances where a graded card was being included in the raw numbers, which might cause a misleading spike in value. So trust, but verify.

Let’s remember—I’m not just tracking who’s hot with these reports. I’m digging into why cards are moving, what that momentum might mean going forward, and whether today’s price is a ceiling… or just a rest stop.

Just as important: I’m looking at the player’s card situation too (supply, comps, listing trends) to figure out if now’s the time to jump in or if it makes more sense to wait.

We all have different triggers and risk tolerances, so what makes sense for me might not make sense for you (and vice versa).

So, from sneaky volume spikes to breakout prospects and bounce-back plays, here are a handful of names and trends worth keeping an eye on.

1. Abner Uribe, Brewers

Lesson and takeaways: Look at multiple data points

Sometimes it’s not so much the value, but the volume. When you look at the value graph below, it doesn’t look like much; maybe a very slight uptick over the last 60 days.

But if you only looked at that one piece of data, you’d miss the fact that the card has sold 11 times over the last two days. Once you start looking at the numbers regularly - for all cards - you’ll learn that 11 sales in two days for a 2023 card is a bit abnormal.

So why the uptick? He’s having an all-star caliber season out of the pen:

With a 1.53 ERA, Uribe is tied for sixth among qualified NL relievers. For Uribe, that number is inflated by just a couple of bad outings — he's allowed earned runs in just three of his 30 appearances, but in two of those he allowed multiple. Additionally, Uribe is currently setting the pace for holds in all of MLB with 16. The holds leader is generally the league's best set-up man because it means a majority of their appearances are coming in high-leverage situations where their team is winning a close game, but they aren't the ones to close things out.
